We are spiritual beings living a human experience. So, isn’t everything we do spiritual? …. We leave the question to meditate on it. It might be a new concept for some. Every new idea is. Everything we feel and think will increase or decrease the presence of spirituality in our lives. So, do the clothes we wear, they have an impact on us and everything around us. Everything in the universe is composed of the same essential subtle elements, and the energy vibration emitted by each living can influence changes.  

This article talks about Sustainable Eco-Fashion and its path to spirituality. The idea of sustainable fashion X spirituality is part of a broader path towards a more conscious way of life. The concept may seem new, but the approach goes back to the dawn of humankind. Spirituality exists in all beings, in various degrees of concentration and combination, moving on a physical, emotional, and mental level.  

The energy vibration of clothes depends on factors such as the type of fabric, the shape, the colour, design, amount of stitches, among others. The purer these factors, the more virtue the final product will be.   

Natural fibers such as silk and cotton can attract, drink, and retain the divine frequencies of the atmosphere. Clothes made of artificial fiber fabrics such as nylon, terylene, rayon, and polyester do not possess the same capabilities.   

The white, yellow, and blue colours are peaceful colours and those that most attract spiritual and positive vibrations. Patterns such as flowers, leaves, dots, and vines possess similar attributes. Clothes dyed with natural dyes and positive colours, without preconceived designs, in general, attract good vibrations.

Fashion and sustainability are two words that do not go well together. You may ask why?

Let’s break it down.

1. From global shrinking of freshwater reservoirs to depletion of fossil fuels, all are byproducts of garment production and transportation.
2. Heavy usage of pesticides and man-made synthetic fibres has a huge adverse impact on the environment.
3. As per UNFCC, the global fashion industry produces around 10% of green house gas emissions.
4. 20% of global waste water is all due to the fashion industry.
5. Going at this rate, the ‘State of Fashion Report-2018’ by McKinsey & Company predicts that the Fashion Industry is set to use a quarter of world’s carbon budget by 2050.


Alarming, isn’t it? We do not want the Fashion Industry to wage war against the very planet we call our home. Today, the fashion Industry should be held accountable to answer questions of sustainability. Majority of the high street brands which push mass production and quick revenue model ahead of the environment should pause and take a look at the bigger picture- the adverse impact of fast fashion on the social and ecological environment. But since we can’t wash our hands off fashion, we need to regulate and revolutionize the fashion industry. Say hello to SLOW FASHION.

Slow Fashion = No mass production

The Slow Fashion movement is a revolutionary concept that stands for the value of artisans and designers who are constantly working towards inventing value-oriented durable fashion that tends to have a positive impact on the environment with respect to procuring raw materials and product manufacture.

One of the key materials that are heading the Slow Fashion movement is leather. To battle the negative narrative surrounding the ethical sourcing and production of this material, many leading brands have come together with strong policies that workin favor of ethical leather sourcing, stronger environmental standards and a transparent production line.

Why Leather should be your sustainable choice?

Faux leather or the so-called vegan leather is made of PVC or polyester, or simply called plastic. These are made of non-biodegradable materials powered by fossil fuels. If you think killing animals is cruel, then how can you support killing of the planet.

With the launch of new approved assessment guidelines by EU’s Environmental Footprint Steering Committee that deems leather as byproduct from animals killed for food consumption, the material now falls under a positive light when compared to plastic in terms of overall environmental impact.

• Reuse: No fashion is old. Ever heard of the term Vintage Fashion? So play around with what you have. Mix and match to get that out-of-the-box look. After all, every odd is a style.
• Recycle: Give that old black midi dress a sexy trim and voila! You now have a picture-perfect LBD and an amazingly recycled dress. You can even look for brands that believe in creating fashion through recycled products. 2. Avoid Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is the opposite of sustainable fashion. In order to stay in popular style, some brands launch new designs in quick succession and this practice is rarely ethical. Finding natural raw materials for fabric is difficult at such a fast pace and hence, the products tend to be chemically made from plastic or man-made non-biodegradable substances that add to textile waste.

3. Read The Tag

Do you know how the dresses you are trying on are made? Is it Handmade or factory made? Is the fabric synthetic or natural? Finding answers to these questions can easily help you make a choice whether to buy the dress or not. For instance, a dress made of linen not only looks fashionable but is also durable and biodegradable. Trick is to check for clothes made from sustainable and natural fibres like organic hemp, organic linen, ethically sourced leather, etc.

By 2050, the textile industry will end up adding 22 million tons of microfiber into the water bodies increasing their carbon footprint from 2 to 26%, a recent report suggests. The upcoming debacle has thus made many fashion designers opt for the Green Code in their work.

Here’s everything that you need to know about recycled plastic – the fabricated material, and if it, at all, promises sustainability.

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

The recycled plastic used in fashion is predominantly made from a material known as PET. It comes in the form of Thermoplastic Polyester Resin, which stays liquid when hot and solidifies as the temperature decreases. The chemical structure of PET makes it sturdy, lightweight and flexible making it a favorite across the fashion industry. It is widely used in making textiles, bottles and other packaging materials.   

Mechanical Recycling

This is a process commonly used for recycling PET materials. First, the plastic is cleaned and grounded into tiny prills (approx 3mm wide). Then the prills are heated to turn into a viscous liquid, which forms the core of the recycled PET.

Recycled PET can be turned into almost anything; for making clothes it’s turned into ‘recycled polyester yarns’. Unlike virgin PET, recycled PET polyester is environmentally beneficial.

According to a recent plastic life-cycle assessment, recycled PET leads to 40 to 85% of non-renewable energy savings. It reduces global warming by 25%, which can be increased to as much as 75%, studies claim. The production process also emits lesser carbon.

Many designers across the world have come forward in this Green Clothes Initiative by creating weather resilient, long-lasting and comfortable clothes from recycled PET plastic. The benefits of such clothes are plenty. They:

• 1) reduce foreign oil dependency
• 2) diminish toxin quantity released in the air due to waste burning
• 3) cut down dumping of waste bottles into the landfills significantly

So, plastic clothes serve the dual role of catering to people’s fashion needs and eliminating environmental wastes at the same time – a win-win situation!

Plastic spun threads can be easily blended with other fibers to produce varied fabrics such as polyester, faux fur, vinyl, faux leather, acrylic rayon, nylon etc.

 The eco-conscious fashion has found its place in the clothing lines for all irrespective of gender, age and taste. One can notice a growing trend of using recycled PET in beach wears and swimsuits as well. The style, fit and texture of green clothes are as good as the regular ones. The only difference you are making by buying them is the one you are making to your planet.

In January 2020, Tennis Australia and a garment company named NC John & Sons came together to mould 1,88,708 PET bottles into apparels.  The company tailored around 25,000 garments for the Australian Open Tennis Tournament and all of them were made of 100% recycled polyester.
